As others have stated this is a poor design. I can't state as the others have how thin the pieces that prevents over-extending, but I can state it does break. The effect is that the kick stand is almost worthless as it slopes the bike too much and it wants to fall over.
I had the same problem others have had. The metal part at the end of the bracket that holds the leg from over-extending broke off during normal use. I had it about four months. The bike shop replaced it under warranty, and ordered a bunch more. They knew they would be dealing with this problem again! This is unique to Trek hybrids and the Trek 520 (mine). It's a great design otherwise. I hope Trek fixes the flaw.
I've had this for about 6 months. Last week, the part that stops the kickstand in place broke off. I'm not hard on it nor do I use it everyday. I bought this because it was specific to Trek hybrids, and it wasn't too expensive. Now I know why.
The stop that supports the leg when in parked positio is made of cast aluminum and about as wide as a match stick....but not as strong. I have purchased two of these and with a loaded bike, a Trek, both have broken in the spot mentioned allowing the bike to fall. Might work on a 16 lb racing bike, but if you are a torist, forget it. Bontrager needs to really rethink selling this product.
The part that hold the leg in place when parked is about the width of a wooden match, but not as strong. I have broken two of them whe my panniers were on the bike. I have no plans on buying a third one. Very, very poor engineering design. Liked how it attached to the rear dropout, but that was the ONLY plus for this kickstand. Might work well on a 17 lb. racing bike, but forget itnif you are a tourist. Bontrager should be ashamed of this product!
This is designed specifically for certain Trek bikes and should be better advertised.. I almost bought a universal kickstand but fortunately stumbled on to this one. When I saw the picture showing how it mounts I looked at my DS2 and was surprised to see that mine has the integrated mounting pad which is designed for this kickstand. In fact you can't use this kickstand on any other bike unless you started drilling and threading holes for the bolts. My local Bike shop was shocked when I ordered this through them. They said Trek never told them about the matching parts and now carries them in their shop. Kudos to the engineers who designed this, but hey Trek, you could sell a lot more if you advertised it better.
